Swiss 🇨🇭 1864 - 1930
Adolf Wölfli was born in Bern in 1864. He was orphaned at age 10 and experienced a challenging and traumatic childhood. While committed to the Waldau Clinic in Bern, he began producing art that drew the attention of psychiatrist Dr. Walter Morganthaler. Wölfli is credited with being one of the first artists to bring Outsider Art into the public conscious.
Wölfli called his smaller-scale works 'bread art' because they brought in money for art supplies.
