Russian 🇷🇺 1864 - 1941
Alexej von Jawlensky was a Russian Expressionist painter who was mostly active in Germany. He is most well known for his Meditations series, which shows his characteristic use of color and stylized facial features.
von Jawlensky's works were confiscated by the Nazis during WWII and included in their infamous 'Degenerate Art' exhibition in 1937. Thankfully, many of his works still exist and are recognized internationally.
I knew that I must paint not what I saw, but only what was in me, in my soul.
