Arthur F. Mathews

Arthur Frank Mathews was an influential American painter, part of the Tonalist movement, and a key figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement in California. Born in Markesan, Wisconsin, and later based in San Francisco, Mathews had a significant impact on Californian art and design in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Alongside his wife, Lucia Kleinhans Mathews, he promoted the California Decorative Style, integrating art into everyday life through furniture, murals, and other decorative items. His work includes public mural commissions and contributions to the artistic and cultural rebuilding of San Francisco following the 1906 earthquake.
