Conrad Martens was a London-born watercolor painter who became one of the first professional European painters to settle in Australia in the early 19th century. He was hired to join the scientific expedition on the HMS Beagle and produced watercolors of the natural landscapes they encountered. He settled in Australia where he lived and worked permanentely for the rest of his life.
Martens became friends and worked alongside none other than Charles Darwin while working on the HMS Beagle in 1833.
