George Barbier was one of the most celebrated Art Deco illustrators of the 20th century. He was a multi-faceted artist who created haute couture illustrations, ballet costumes, jewellery design, and book illustrations, among other things. He had his first exhibition in 1911 at the age of 29 and his career took off from there.
Barbier had a traditional art education, but his artistic style varied significantly from the style of his teachers. You can see his admiration of classical antiquity in his works, which sometimes look like images from Greek vases.
