Jan Toorop was a Dutch-Indonesian painter born in the Dutch East Indies. He worked in various styles throughout his career, including Pointilism and Art Nouveau. He was heavily influenced by the Impressionist movement in his early works. His works show a very versatile style, from skilled realistic sketches to impressionistic paintings.
Art Nouveau was called 'salad oil style' for a long time in the Netherlands because Toorop illustrated a famous Art Nouveau-style poster for a salad oil brand.
