Johannes Vermeer

Dutch 🇳🇱 1632 - 1675

Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch Baroque Period painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. Born in Delft, Netherlands, Vermeer was baptized on October 31, 1632, and buried on December 16, 1675. Despite creating around 36 paintings, Vermeer’s work was not widely known beyond Delft during his lifetime, gaining fame only in the 19th century.

Vermeer's use of light and perspective might have been influenced by his interest in the camera obscura, a device that projects the image of its surroundings onto a screen, and he is sometimes credited with being one of the first to use it for artistic purposes.
