Max Beckmann

German 🇩🇪 1884 - 1950

Max Beckmann was a German painter, printmaker, and sculptor who created a wide variety of work. Beckmann’s traumatic WWI experience led him to depict darker, disturbing themes and subjects in his artwork. A contrarian against the art world establishment, Beckmann rejected the Expressionist movement and non-representational painting. His repertoire includes historical scenes, landscapes, portraits, and still life paintings.

Art is creative for the sake of realization, not for amusement... for transfiguration, not for the sake of play.
