Pierre-Joseph Redouté was a botanist and painter who dominated botanical painting in the early 19th century. He is most well known for his watercolor paintings of the flowers at the French chateau, Malmaison. His works gained international recognition, and he is still considered one of the top botanical illustrators in history.
Redouté was the official court artist of Marie Antoinette and was able to ride out both the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror. He continued to paint and gain patrons afterwards.
