Thomas Moran was an American painter who was a part of the Hudson River School in New York. He became a chief illustrator for Scirbner’s Monthly, which catapulted him into success as one of the leading American landscape painters. He is most well known for his landscapes of the US West.
Moran’s sketches of Yellowstone were instrumental in drumming up public support for establishing Yellowstone National Park. This was also his first large-scale commercial success as an artist.
