Winslow Homer

American 🇺🇸 1836 - 1910

Winslow Homer was a landscape painter, illustrator, and printmaker based in the United States. Homer was mostly self-taught and began his career as a commercial illustrator, contributing to Harper’s Weekly. His landscapes reflected scenes from his working vacations, and his paintings with figures in them masterfully convey unspoken emotion and tension.

Winslow Homer received a compliment from famous American author Henry James, who described his work by saying Homer had 'incontestably succeeded' in showcasing quotidian subjects in a pictorial way.

Artists should never look at pictures, but should stutter in a language of their own.
