Robert Smithson

American 🇺🇸 1938 - 1973

Robert Smithson was a sculptor and co-founder of the Land Art movement. His installation Spiral Jetty from 1970 is largely recognized as his most famous artwork. His art installs interact directly with the natural environment and explore the relationship between nature and human intervention. His work is held in collections at the Tate Modern, the Whitney, and other institutions.

A work of art when placed in a gallery loses its charge, and becomes a portable object or surface disengaged from the outside world.
